In the first half of the 1900s the American Falls would freeze over regularly, there was even an incident where some dumbasses attempted to traverse the ice bridge over the falls and it collapsed killing them all. In the 1850's the Niagra River was actually dammed up at the inlet by ice and the entire falls went dry.
