Some did. I had to research the psychological effects of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I'm no expert, but I've seen survivors with worse damage (though it may not appear as bad on the outside). I remember one especially where a 40 year old woman has to wear bandages around her stomach because one of her kidneys and part of the top layer of the skin on her stomach are melted to her ribs... :/
