The Giant of Cardiff

The Cardiff Giant was one of the most famous hoaxes in United States history. It was a 10-foot (3.0 m) tall purported "petrified man" uncovered on October 16, 1869 by workers digging a well behind the barn of William C. "Stub" Newell in Cardiff, New York. Both it and an unauthorized copy made by P.T. Barnum are still on display.

I've seen it. The original was displayed in Cooperstown NY in the 60s.

This was one hell of a hoax. It had the 19th century religious in an uproar and it wasn't until scientists checked it out that the joke was revealed. The Crdiff giant is in a farmers museum somewhere these days.

seems like people were way more gullible in the past. they'd believe anything in the newspaper, no matter how far fetched.

good thing we have the internet now.
