Freaky Foot-Binding Tradition

The origin of a foot-binding tradition called lily feet is uncertain. But it is believed that it appeared during the Five Dynasties (907–960). According to legend, a king asked a lady-in-waiting named Ruiniang to bind her feet and dance on a golden lotus flower, so it was called three-cun lily feet. After that, the custom of foot-binding emerged. But this custom ceased after the founding of New China, and shoes for lily feet entered the museums. (Source: Chinese Shoe Culture Museum)

I remember reading the story about it from the last post. Apparently, an uncovered foot like this smells horrible, if you can believe that.

"If toe nails grew into the instep, infection could set in. If the bindings were too tight, gangrene and blood poisoning could occur. The bound foot was painful and tender forever. It often had an unpleasant smell."

But I guess the smell was supposed to be arousing. Like Napoleon. When he would came back to Josephine from the battlefield, he would send to her in advance not to bathe, because he liked the smell.
