"ART"

To test the limits of the relationship between performer and audience, Abramović developed one of her most challenging (and best-known) performances. She assigned a passive role to herself, with the public being the force which would act on her. Abramović had placed upon a table 72 objects that people were allowed to use (a sign informed them) in any way that they chose. Some of these were objects that could give pleasure, while others could be wielded to inflict pain, or to harm her. Among them were a rose, a feather, honey, a whip, scissors, a scalpel, a gun and a single bullet. For six hours the artist allowed the audience members to manipulate her body and actions. Initially, members of the audience reacted with caution and modesty, but as time passed (and the artist remained impassive) people began to act more aggressively. As Abramović described it later: “What I learned was that… if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you.” … “I felt really violated: they cut up my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away. It created an aggressive atmosphere. After exactly 6 hours, as planned, I stood up and started walking toward the audience. Everyone ran away, to escape an actual confrontation.”

I don't give a fuck about this 'artist' I did however find the back story interesting and it to me seemed more of a social experiment.

It would have been more awesome if someone actually shot her. Like, shot her in the leg or something. Would they be charged with a crime? Since she was committed to being there for 6 hours, what if she bled out? Did she really think that people were just going to be nice to her?

Lately I heard a lot of politicians and philosophers on radio and tv here. They always talk about they think humans are good. How they think in the end people are good, and want to do the right thing. I don't agree with them. But it seems that people that think this and propagate this seem to end up as respected politicians and philosophers. Yet around us, and in this experiment, and so many others we see the proof of the contrary ... I find that strange ...

individual persons want the best, people want the worst. In a group, you want to destroy the other groups, for your survival. As a person you want to belong to a group so you do everything you can to show you want what's best for that group.

I can agree with that.
Maybe you can take it even further ? An individual want's the best, for himself ... Belonging to a group increases chances of survival ... So doing your best to show your loyalty to the group. In good ways toward your group, in bad ways to "defend" it from other groups. Kinda seems to hold together to me ...
