i'n no expert but it seems to happen on laerger areas of ink, not on designs with thin lines. It happens when the scabs don't fall off evenly, so you get areas where the skin is thicker and so the tattoo can get patchy. It's not obvious unless you look closely. I've been lucky to not have it happen to me but have seen others with it
