I thought rendering was the process of creating a textured model you could actually look at from any angle. That said, although this is skewing an image, it's impressive how it keeps the proportions pretty close.

single frames from a video camera

single frames from a video camera? what does that even mean? wouldnt that be the same as from any camera? if you're saying it was multiple images then i think the guys who created this can consider it a mission accomplished....

CotB - Rendering is really just the act (art) of creating a CG image from any angle. It's a matter of taking a 'wireframe' model (known as a mesh) and applying a texture to it, which is then viewed from and number of angles. From there you can either use an app to 'spin' the mesh around in a 360* rotation or not. I think there is a program called Cult3D, which does that with many web based apps. The actual process of creating the 'image' from the CG wireframe and texture map/s is for the most part, considered to be "rendering".

The use of the term 'rendering' is a bit gray at this point.

For example, if I use my 3dsMax v.8 to create a 'still life' image or if I use it to create an object which is used with Chroma Key (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroma_key) to incorporate it with my live action actors/props it would still be considered rendering. A good example would be the logs falling off of the truck in the movie ‘Final Destination –2’ or much of the stuff you would see in a movie like Star Wars: RotS.

I'm not sure I would call what is seen here 'rendering' as it appears to be more along the lines of photo manipulation, much of which can easily be done with newer versions of PhotoShop

Sorry if this makes no sense, but hey... I've got a monster buzz, it’s a wee bit technical, and I don’t want to sound like I know what I’m talking about. :)

This was all taken from a single 2-D image? Absolutely amazing. I didn't even see the ship in the first image, dunno how I missed it...

is this oging to lead to realistic looking game environments? and obviously, simpler game design? well, for settings that are in real/modern places anyways.

If this amuses you then you should check out the 1983 musical pyramid.

In my opinon, the pictures don't really go 3D. In ever single one, the ground stretches forward, and there are only 2 other sides, neither of which are any more complex than being flat...meaning that things like doorways, or people, or windowsills never stick out, they are all on the same plane as the rest of the wall. In my opinion, this isn't that impressive. It goes from being a flat plane picture, to being a boxy, barely 3D image. If someone could explain why this might be so amazing, I would love to hear.

to render is to realize or make - it's not a purely technical term and has been around forever - an artist renders a sketch, a boxer renders you unconscious, adobe illustrator renders 2d vector graphics and whatever this program is - it renders 3d graphics from 2d ones.

it's using contrast between objects to figure out the perspective of the image so it can place the appropriate parts of the image on 3d wireframe planes - to give the illusion of going into the image it HAS to stretch the pixels - not really mindblowing or anyting - they have a new tool in photoshop cs2 called the perspective tool that does this too.

christ, I went to carnegie mellon university.
I fucking hate that fucking school.
The ratio of guys to girls is 4 to 1. The frats there are a bunch of nerds who think beer will solve all their antisocial problems, the faculty fucking sucks, the school is essentially a fucking factory churning out unoriginal engineers.
I spent more time at the university of pittsburgh hanging out then I did at my own fucking school.
Oh, and by the way, yeah we had live bands perform... let's see, blues traveler and Rusted Root. Wow, that's so fucking badass I wanna shoot myself.

oh, and btw, as a fucking wonderful anecdote about my favorite fucking university.
That building at the end is the new fine arts building or some shit, where they do plays and some art shows.
when I was a junior or some shit they installed an electronic billboard sign, i dunno what you call it, it has those moving red lights to display messages and announcements.
And, true story, I was approached mulitple times on campus by students trying to get a petition signed to take the sign down because it was "tacky."
And you wonder why I became a heroin addict.
