proof that american's don't speak english
5 years ago
You're right, we don't. We speak American English. Also, we felt no need to develop that stupid accent (which yes, came after America was colonized to imitate 'posh' society) or to add needless letters to reflect it. And you should drop that apostrophe btw, it's not a conjunction, nor is it possessive.
it denotes the omission of the 'o' in the word not. hah
5 years ago
its not 'adding' needless letters , the 'u' was there to start with... its only done to American idleness that you removed it.
oh the other one...fail :(

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word humor is Middle English via Old french from Latin 'humor' which means moisture. The original sense was 'bodily fluid' (exact same definition from Latin) to which the English added the u, for no apparent reason.
So no, it wasn't there to start with. You limeys are such posers.
yeah we added it and called it english, you remove it and still call it english

"The General American accent is rhotic and speakers pronounce the r in words such as hard. The BBC-type British accent is non-rhotic, and speakers don’t pronounce the r, leaving hard sounding more like hahd. Before and during the American Revolution, the English, both in England and in the colonies, mostly spoke with a rhotic accent.
Around the turn of the 18th 19th century, not long after the revolution, non-rhotic speech took off in southern England, especially among the upper and upper-middle classes. It was a signifier of class and status. This posh accent was standardized as Received Pronunciation and taught widely by pronunciation tutors to people who wanted to learn to speak fashionably. Because the Received Pronunciation accent was regionally “neutral” and easy to understand, it spread across England and the empire through the armed forces, the civil service and, later, the BBC."

i believe Americans speak English but not as proper as the British..then the young ghetto black folks screwed up the entire language by intergrating 'ebonics' and rap...
even the language barrier is different when it comes to sex ..when American men come to an orgasm, they yell out "i'm coming!..i'm cuumming!..i'm cccuuuummmmmminngggg!"..proper British guys scream out "Oh, dear!..i'm arrivinggggg!!"...
The 'proper' part is completely fabricated. Americans speak the way the British did when America was colonized. Ebonics stems from uneducated slaves who never learned to speak English properly, and it went off on its own tangent from there as a form of self-identity. American-English is proper English.

pffft America doesnt have any history.... it all came from us Brits
5 years ago
while that may be true zeke, we are discussing written not spoken english. Besides, it would sound more like jamaican, not american, like the west country folk who still speak rhotic.
America = No history whatsoever

And makodragon, I already discussed the presence of the u in humor, which was the debate to begin with. The word is Latin, and does not have a u originally.
and I already said latin isn't english
You took the word from Latin and added a u. We dropped it. I couldn't find when or why, but I wouldn't be surprised if America dropped the u simply to spite you. That's the reason we race horses counter-clockwise and drive on the right hand side of the road. Because fuck England.
