To summarize. A bag of carrots labeled potatoes goes to upvotedom. But this car crash gif is downvoted. Clearly, car crashes are way fucking cooler than carrots. Maybe you could just say, it is the wind, an act of nature, chance. But I suspect it's prejudice or a popularity contest.
To spell it out a little more deeply. Someone well known or well liked submits something that is an utter waste of time. But because they submitted it, the commoners will upvote. There is a psychological term for this, it's gang mentality.
My suggestion to diffuse this gang mentality popularity contest bs is really simple. Remove the who submitted and who cast what vote on something. Once it's gone onto upvotedom or the front one may then reveal those details. Why is this a good idea? I'll spell it out from an admin/webmaster/yak point of view because that is probably the only one that matters. If you want more people to come to a website, will they come more often or at all if there are pictures of carrots or car crashes?
